What's In A Name

This past weekend, we had the misfortune of hanging out in the animal ER while we waited for our dog Mason (a black lab/hound mix) to get his paw patched up after he banged up his wrist overzealously practicing the tornado drill (hunkering down in the bath tub to protect himself from the evening thunderstorms and the fireworks celebrating Smyrna’s birthday celebration).

While we waited, I couldn’t help but be entertained by the parade of pets (mostly dogs) that came through—listening to their names and trying to figure out what inspired the owners to call them that. Among the group was Houdini, Zeus, W, Brie, Sluggo and Lexie—none of which were among the 30 most popular pet names in 2005.

Our dog came to us at 10 years of age with his name already in place, though given his penchant for sucking up any morsel that makes it to the floor, we’ve often thought he’d be more aptly named Dyson or Roomba.

So, what’s your pet’s name and why did you choose it?
Comments:
I know this wasn't the question I was asked, but I am most intrigued by Mason's tornado drill. My dog, Nieko (also his name when he came to me) an 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel, likes to hide in my bedroom closet during a storm. I like to refer to it as his storm shelter. It has gotten so bad, that if rain is predicted, I have to leave the door open or he will knock it off its hinges in order to get inside. Glad to see someone is heeding all those Weather Channel "seek shelter now" warnings.

My kitten is named "Chubs." He also came to us pre-named, and Dave and I liked the name so much we kept it.He really isn't a fat kitten but he does eat a ton.
When we adopted him, he was actually scrawny.

Chubs is obsessed with the bathtub, but not to hide from storms. He likes to jump in the tub when I get out of the shower and tries to catch the water droplets falling down the shower walls, or he will sit on the side of the tub if someone is taking a bubble bath and he will try to catch the bubbles and he has fallen in the tub on more than one occasion.

I have a solid white German Shepherd named Zoe. She is three years old this month, weights 105 pounds and still thinks she's a little puppy. I'm trying to figure out how to tie a dust rag to her tail and make a working dog out of her. I figure if she's going to swipe all the furniture with that long 30-pound tail I might as well get something out of it!

I named her Zoe because it's a German name, is short, and all four of us could agree on it.

My favorite dog name was given to our last dog. She was the most wonderful boxer in the world. Her name was TKO (pronounced tee-ko). I named her that because I thought she was a perfect speciman of the breed; hence, technically, a knock out.

You know I have to get in on this one...

We have two dogs that were named specifically for my husbands favorite movie. About three years ago we adopted a lab (and a little of everything else) mix from the shelter and he was named Rocky, who has now grown to almost 60 pounds. About two years later, my husband went back to the shelter and found her "sister" a pit bull/lab mix and appropriately named her Adrian, now grown to about 50 pounds of pure muscle and a high powered tail. Now my husband loves to stand in the yard and yell 'YO ADRIAN!'

Speaking of storm dogs...we had one growing up that was amazing. Not only could she predict a storm coming, but often it was hours ahead of the Weather Channel. If you couldn't find Shadow, we always knew to go looking in the shower where she would stand shaking, even if it was bright and sunny outside. But a few hours later you knew she was right as the thunder was rolling in.

Otis Libby was named after Otis Redding. Since we adopted him as an adult, it's weird to think he was living with another name for 6+ years before he became Otis. (I mean really, no other name is appropriate at this point - it's so fitting!) Sometimes I try calling him with another name, just to see if I can figure out what his puppy name was, but so far he only comes to Otis (or Treat, Food, Bone, Hungry, Outside, Ball or Walk). Rachel - I used to have a cat named Chubby. I love it!
